If you want to win an Olympic gold medal, you need to have talent and determination. But for many Winter Olympic sports, that’s not all. You also need to be fast. Think of speed skating, downhill skiing, or the luge. Athletes in those sports move so quickly, they almost appear to be flying.
So if Jason wants to bring a gold medal home from Vancouver, he is going to have to fly by his competitors. Find out if he has what it takes to make Olympic history.

Jason: We’re here on the ice at Robson Square in Vancouver, British Columbia, at the 2010 Winter Games. This is English, baby! and this is the fly by challenge. If you want to fly by someone, you don’t have to be flying, you just have to be going as fast as something that flies, whether you’re running, in a car, or speed skating!
Jason: Flyin’ by. Oh man, the gold is at stake.
Jason: Nice helmet. Do you want to race? OK. Let’s race. Here we go. Oh! Oh! Flyin’ by you! I flew right by that girl.
Jason: It’s like I’m flying right by these people and that they don’t even know that there’s a race on. Everybody, just getting passed like crazy.
Jason: Oh, on the inside lane! Yeah. Alright. We’re good. We’re flying by people, just all over the place.
Jason: I have to say, it’s as if a lot of these people aren’t taking the Olympics very seriously. They seem to just be leisurely strolling around the rink, whereas I just fly by them with ease. It’s as if I’m flying. That’s how fast I am when I pass them by. One alternative to fly by is blow by. ‘Cause when you blow by someone, there’s so much wind, it feels like it’s blowing on them, just from you going past them so fast. I think we’re ready to win the gold. This is English, baby!

A few days ago, Jason found a pair of cheap skates in a dumpster at the Winter Olympics. Ever since then, he has been practicing speed skating. He hopes to fly by his competitors so he can win a gold medal in Vancouver and save his friends.
On the practice rink, Jason goes so fast it seems like he’s flying. He blows by all the other skaters. He goes so much faster than them, it’s almost like they don’t realize they’re in a race. It looks like Jason might just have what it takes to win gold in Vancouver.
What do you think it takes to win an Olympic gold medal? What is your favorite sport in which the competitors try to fly by one another? Have you ever flown by anybody when you were skating, skiing, running, or driving?
