My friend, Jen, just recently returned to Portland. She came back because it’s so beautiful and green here. I thought this would be a perfect addition to our green week lessons! Steph:  Hey Emily! This is my friend, Jen.

Emily:  Hey, Jen. Nice to meet you.

Jen:  You, too. Good to meet you, Emily!

Emily:  How are you?

Jen:  I’m doin’ good today.

Emily:  Good. How do you know Steph?

Jen:  We used to go to, well we first met when we went to school together, at the community college up the street.

Emily:  Uh huh.

Jen:  Gosh. That was many years ago.

Emily:  Really? Are you from Portland?

Jen:  Uh, originally. But I had, I just moved back from the state of Ohio last week.

Emily:  What were you doing there?

Jen:  Well, that’s, I went to high school there. And, so, I thought I was here for college, that I wanted to return home after college. But I, when I went back, I realized that NW is where my heart is. So, back to Oregon I am.

Emily:  So, how long have you been back in Portland?

Jen:  Just, like, not even a week.

Emily:  Really?

Jen:  Yeah.

Emily:  Do you love it?

Jen:  I do! I’m so happy.

Emily:  Are you really glad to be back?

Jen:  It is. It’s so green here! It’s just so, I love it! I love the people and the feeling.

Discussion

When you meet someone for the first time, it’s normal to try to find out about them. How do you find out about people you are meeting? You ask them questions, of course! What kinds of questions does Emily ask Jen? Can you think of any other questions that you might ask someone you just met?

I`ll start by a friendly “Hello, how are you?”, then “Where are you from?” and from there i`ll be glad to ask few more questions asking them about what they do and i`ll tell something about myself too. It should be spontaneous not really to sound rehersed. What do u think?

When I meet someone new, I used to start with 'How are you'. Ofcourse it depends upon the circumstances. I am very keen to know about the culture of the people whom I meet.

Defenitely I try to get close with them and try to share feelings.

i might say" how are you" when i meet someone in the first time. indeed, i'm a chinese girl with not that much experience talking with foreigners. the longest conversation i guess maybe it's the interview i was taken. that's a bit funny, i didnt know the interviewer would be a foreigner, the fist sight i saw him just a voice inside my mind " wow, a foreigner" before that, i almost never had chance talking with foreigner, i was nervous and even can felt my legs shaking. but after few minutes friendly talking, it went smoothy. even i didnt be hired but that's really a good experience. yes, the conversation began with " hello, how are you" such phrases.
