The superlative of good is the best. Some students want to be good and some want to be better and others want to be the best.
Trying to be the best student is dangerous though, because sometimes you become a teacher’s pet. A teacher’s pet is a student who is the teacher’s favorite.

Derek: So, were you ever considered the teacher’s pet?
Steph: Um, I’m not really sure. Nobody ever accused me of being the teacher’s pet but I was a pretty good student.
Derek: Well that’s good that you were a good student. But did you kind of kiss up to the teacher?
Steph: Well, I sat there quietly normally and put my hands up on the desk and listened.
Derek: That’s almost a teacher’s pet.
Steph: The teachers did really like me.
Derek: Yeah. It sounds like you were a pretty likable student.
Steph: Were you a teacher’s pet?
Derek: Definitely not. I always sat in the back of classroom and drew pictures.
Steph: So you were a troublemaker.
Derek: Not necessarily a troublemaker. Just not really there.

It’s a fine line that separates a great student from a teacher’s pet. Sometimes, you don’t even realize that you are a teacher’s pet until someone says something about it.
For example, I was a pretty good student and teachers liked me, but if I did something wrong, I got in trouble. A teacher’s pet doesn’t get in trouble.
Are there teacher’s pets in your classes? Are you a teacher’s pet?
