A lot of bands come from big cities like New York or Los Angeles. That’s because those cities have large music cultures and lots of opportunities to play and meet other musicians. But every once in a while, a big band comes out of a little town.
The French band Phoenix doesn’t come from Paris. The group comes from Versailles, which is best known for the grand palace that French kings used to call home. Now this town has become the unlikely home of one of the today’s most successful French rock bands. Hear Jeff and Amy talk about Phoenix.

Jeff: So hey, I’ve been pretty excited about this French band lately. They’re called Phoenix. Have you heard of them?
Amy: I’ve heard a little bit. They’re from Versailles, right?
Jeff: Supposedly, yeah.
Amy: You know, I’ve heard a little bit, and I’ve heard that song “1901,” which is so popular. But I was just in Versailles, and it’s kind of a…you know, except for the palace and everything, it’s kind of quiet…It doesn’t seem like a town that has a big music scene, so it’s interesting.
Jeff: I know Phoenix used to be the back-up band for another French band, Air.
Amy: Oh yeah, of course.
Jeff: And they also were involved with projects with Daft Punk, the two guys from Daft Punk before they became well known.
Amy: So, what’s their music like? How would you describe the style?
Jeff: I’d say it’s pop rock. Almost soft rock sometimes, but they have a lot of electronic elements.
Amy: Do they sing in French?
Jeff: No, in English. But I think it’s worked out for them, growing up in a place kind of off the radar.

Discussion
Jeff is a fan of the French band Phoenix. The band is from Versailles.
Amy asks Jeff what Phoenix’s sound is like. He says they play pop rock. They have worked with other popular French bands before, like Air and Daft Punk.
Jeff and Amy think it is interesting and unusual when bands come from smaller towns. Where does your favorite band come from?
