Go Super to Listen Go Super!

Have you ever been stuck on a bus with someone blaring bad music from his cell phone? If so, you understand why listening to music in public can be so annoying.

Unfortunately, it’s now easier than ever for people to play their music wherever they go. From iPods to cell phones that can now store your entire music library, there are lots of ways to become a traveling one-man band. Hear Mason try to convince Jeff that if you’re going to listen to music in public, you should at least use some headphones.

Jeff:  Dude, I…My parents won’t buy me a car, and these bus rides are boring. So I want to play my music on the bus, and some old lady yells at me.

Mason:  Well, did you use headphones?

Jeff:  Nah, man.

Mason:  But, you know, the polite thing to do would be to be respectful that maybe other people don’t want to listen to that music at that particular time.

Jeff:  I listen to good music.

Mason:  Sure, but, you know, again, I think some headphones, where you could enjoy your music…I happen to love Gene Krupa’s big band. Maybe you’re not a big fan of Gene Krupa’s big band. So if I were to just start playing Gene Krupa big band on the bus very loudly out of my cell phone, where I’m sure it does not sound all that good, coming from those little speakers, would you wish that I was listening to that privately?

Jeff:  Man, you’re old. Do you even have a cell phone that plays music?

Mason:  Well, it makes sounds when someone calls me. So yes. That means it plays music, right?

Jeff:  I guess.

Go Super to Listen Go Super!

Jeff likes to listen to music when he rides the bus. But he was recently yelled at by another passenger. He thinks he should be able to play his music in public as much as he wants.

Mason suggests that Jeff use headphones when listening to music in public. That way, he can enjoy his music, but he will not bother anyone else. Mason points out that Jeff might not enjoy listening to other people’s music, either.

Do you like to listen to music on your iPod or cell phone when you’re in public? Do you use headphones? Does it annoy you when other people listen to their music in public?

If there’s one thing that could make me feel more embarrassed than a pair of frowning eyes, I don’t know it. Whenever I find myself in any public sites, especially on transits, I try to project a good image of myself and try not to attract any evitable and unnecessary attentions from others.

I get intimidated very easily when around elderly persons. So, the last thing I’d do is to behave in a way that could be a source of nuisance to them. That said, I don’t think it will ever cross my mind to play my music at full blast around them in public or without their general consent.

Also, whenever I’m exposed to the public eyes, I try to portray myself as a representative of those who raised and educated me. Why? People might try to blame them if I don’t carry myself respectfully. I don’t want them to take the fall for me

I also think it’s important to maintain an exemplary image in public that the younger ones could safely follow. Those innocent kids tend to pick up bad behaviors quite quickly. So you want to make sure to be a good role model in their presence.

But the main thing is to have self-respect. Abide to public etiquettes and rules to attract others’ respect as well. Don’t do anything that can mislead someone else to view you as a barbaric, disrespectful person with no consideration for others. That’s bad marketing for yourself, you wouldn’t want that.

So when I feel like listening to some music in public, I must have my earphones attached to my device. I like to do what I called a “noise emission test” to avoid disturbing other people around me. I turn on my music device at a very low volume, and I gradually increase it until I can barely hear a muttering sound from the tiny speakers: ), then I shove my headsets into my eardrums. I might even turn it down even more if the person beside me or in front of me turns around and says with the eyes “hey, I can hear what you’re listening, you know?” (I’m not a mind reader, but I can read signs: I’m paraphrasing Miley Cyrus with that) (No, I don’t have any of her songs stored on my mp3 player)   :- )

Sometimes, I don’t even like to answer my phone when I’m on a public transit : )

I like to call those points I just mentioned, “My public complex”. These are self-imposed ethics. I don’t act deliberately especially around strangers; they study your actions and it’s only a matter of minutes, seconds even, before they have their opinions about you.

Tip: Mind your manners in public and draw some prestige for your own interest.

Tongue out

I’m an eclectic person. Each music has our proper time to be listening. But without the proper respect, we’ll never be respected. Jesus taught us that “Therefore, whatever you want people to do for you, do the same for them…” (Matthew 7:12). So do not disturb your next, if you don’t want suffer the same thing.
May God bless you all.

As for bottles of alcohol to walk with. We have a law in Belarus ( I sure Germany has it too) “People are not allowed to drink spirits in public places, like parks, streets etc” There are plenty of special places for these purposes.Smile

Sorry, but was Jeff whining because his parents didn’t get him a car? Seriously? C’mon, you’re a grownup man! If you want a car, go work and then get one! :P

And, oh my gosh, getting on a crowded bus is already annoying by itself! I don’t need loud music playing there too. I’d really appreciate if people started to use headphones more often, but it seems we’re in the middle of a dispute of who plays music louder in public. It’s a serious case of noise pollution! =/

What a nice  lesson once again!!! Thanks, eBaby!

I can’t imagine my life without music. I try to use any opportunity to turn my favourite music on without  any harm to ears of other people. I always listen music through my iRiver, wearing headphones (when I’m in public places such as bus, subway, streets or supermarkets).

I use the small headphones Ritmix RH-128. I like the sound they produce. :) They are almost invisible. :)

Despite my love and respect to all kinds of music. It annoys when other people listen to their music in public. Thank goodness, there are not many people in Belarus, which turn their music on for people around them to listen. Belarussian people prefer walkmans ;)

Julito and Anja, I agree with your opinion.

I’d like to share with you one story. Last summer, when my family and I were on picnic near the river, the band of people came to the river  by their car. They stopped the car on the “green zone” ( it is a big infringement, indeed). Then they opened the door of the car widely and turned the “shanson music” on in the high level of volume. It was awful to see their actions! What a wild people!!! Somebody came to them and asked  to make the sound lower, but they said nobody is allowed to ask them to do what they don’t want to do, because it is their right while they are have fun near the river and forest. What people have to do? To start  a fight? – not wise decision, because it will  spoil your weekend and mood. Many people were forced to remove themselves to other better place near the river far away from that strange and not polite band.Frown

I don’t listen to music when I am on a bus cause I don’t use buses and public transportation in general. I have a car and if I need to get somewhere I ususaly go there by car. In the car I do listen to my player, and it’s usually some FM station as I don’t have any particular preferences in music. But overall I do understand what Mason says here. I agree that sometimes some people can find it quite anoying when others listen to music in public and they don’t use their headphones. Still, I have to say that as for me I am pretty  comfortable with it. I don’t get irritated and annoyed…but yeah it’s better to avoid such things.

yeah, i like listening to music on my cell phone while travelling and when i m in public…and i use headphones that time because i can understand that what, i like, may bother someone as I sometimes get bothered when other people blare….

but it soemtimes depends on the what song they listen to…. if they listen to what I like, I request them to play loudly so that i can enjoy listening to that bearing this in mind that none gets bothered….

i think listening to music is never a problem but the problem comes when you expose what kind of music you’re listening to!

I really love music and listening to my favorite songs. I used to listen music on my phone with my headset on of course, specially whenever I’m on my way to work or when I travel to another place i always listen to music in the car or any kind of transporation because listening to music makes me feel comfortable, relax and unwind. Its really annoying to me when people listen to hard rock and boring music and they don’t use headset. Therefor listening to good songs make my day. :)

Remember We don’t like the same kind of music, I think all the people should use headphones while they’re listening music in public.

I don’t mind if it’s a good music, like Joe Dassin but if it’s like something like heavy metal with screaming voices …Oh, my I’ll get crazy from that noise pollution and even Joe Dossin won’t save me. And why do i need to listen someone’s music. It’s the same as someone’s reading a book and he’s reading it loud. But some people are okwith this. They like it because it fills up the void around them and they’re happy that they’re not alone in this world, but with somebody else creaming at the top of his lungs.
