When the weather starts to warm up, you might begin to hear the sound of waves and feel warm sand between your toes. The beach is calling. You should grab your swimsuit, your sunscreen, a beach towel and head out!
Not everyone is lucky enough to live near a beach. That’s why islands and other spots near the ocean are such popular places to vacation. The idea of lying in the sun and splashing in the sea is pretty attractive to most people. Find out if Ella and Jason like going to the beach.

Jason: I can’t wait until it’s warm enough to go to the beach.
Ella: I went to the beach yesterday.
Jason: Oh my gosh, where?
Ella: In Tahoe. It’s pretty warm there now, so I just lay out on the sand. It’s not warm enough to go swimming.
Jason: Oh, that’s all that counts for me.
Ella: Really?
Jason: Yeah. I’m not really looking to build a sandcastle or play volleyball. You know, getting tan is kind of cool, but for me, it’s all about just jumping in the waves and getting that salt water all over your body. It’s awesome.
Ella: Yeah, I don’t like to get wet. I’m more of a have a nice alcoholic beverage and lay out and relax, possibly read a book or paint my nails.
Jason: The one thing that bugs me about the beach is that it’s often windy.
Ella: Sometimes. And then the sand gets in your eyes, and you’re kind of uncomfortable, or you’re just constantly shaking your towel off to get the sand away. I hate that.
Jason: Ooh, that too. I used to live near the beach, and my house was full of sand at all times. It was…I have no idea where it kept coming from, like, I wouldn’t have even gone to the beach that day, and there would just be more sand.
Ella: Yeah. Sand just manages to get in the most incredible places you can imagine.

Discussion
Jason is excited for the weather to get warmer so he can go to the beach. Ella says she just went to the beach. She was in California, where the weather is warmer. But it wasn’t warm enough to go swimming. She just worked on her tan and relaxed.
For Jason, the beach is all about swimming in the waves. He doesn’t like going to the beach if he can’t go swimming. But Ella doesn’t like to get wet. For her, the best part about going to the beach is relaxing in the sun.
The worst part about going to the beach may be the wind. It’s often windy near the ocean, and that can make sand go everywhere. Jason says he used to live near the beach, and there was always sand in his house, even when he hadn’t been to the beach for a long time.
Do you like going to the beach? Do you live near the beach? What do you like to do at the beach?
