Police Report

Date: Aug 16 2002

Intro

1. Learn Vocabulary - Learn some new vocabulary before you start the lesson.

2. Read and Prepare - Read the introduction and prepare to hear the audio.

Have you ever been robbed? It’s a terrible feeling. Not only is your stuff taken, but someone has been inside your private area!
The first thing you should do when you are robbed is call the police. They will write up a police report and then look for your stolen items.
Unfortunately, I had the chance to file a police report last week. Someone broke in and stole my laptop. Here are some of the things I learned about police reports from that experience.

Dialog

1. Study - Read the dialog again to see how the vocab words are used.

Last week someone broke into my place and stole my laptop. Luckily there was a witness, so I got a good description of the burglar.
I went out in my neighborhood to find someone who matched the description. The suspect was wearing a tie-dye shirt and black jeans, and had black shoulder-length thinning hair. I walked all over my neighborhood looking for the person, but I couldn’t find him.
Eventually I ran into a police officer. I told him what I was doing and he told me he could write a police report for me.
He started asking me questions regarding the time and date of the break-in. He asked me what exactly was stolen. Since it was a computer, he wanted to know the make and model, as well as the color and serial number.
Finally he asked me for a description of the man. I told him everything I knew and he said he would keep his eye out for me.
My computer hasn’t turned up yet, but I have a very good feeling that it will soon. The lesson I learned was to keep my place locked and to have insurance.

Discussion

Being robbed is a terrible thing. However, there are things you can do to keep it from happening.
- Always lock your doors and windows.
- Leave a light on at night.
- Know your neighbors well and ask them to keep an eye on your place when you’re gone.
- Record the serial numbers of all your electronic goods.
- Have a dog.
All of these things can help keep burglars away. And just in case they don’t, you might think about getting some insurance.
See you next week,
John
