Imagine Dragons rose to fame in 2012, but their success didn’t stop there. Famous music magazine Rolling Stone called their song “Radioactive” one of the biggest rock hits of 2013, and music TV station MTV called them “the year’s biggest breakout band.”
Band members are Dan Reynolds, Ben McKee, Daniel Wayne Sermon, and Daniel Platzman. Imagine Dragons began in college, and later added more members through high school friendships and other university connections. They first played together in the state of Utah, but moved to Las Vegas, Nevada where they made studio music and, eventually, were successful enough to go on tour.
Why do Jessica and Gary like Imagine Dragons? Find out in today’s English lesson about an alternative rock band.

Jessica: I keep hearing that song…
Gary: Which one?
Jessica: …by Imagine Dragons on the radio. It’s called “On Top of the World.”
Gary: I know their song “Radioactive.”
Jessica: Yeah, this is very different. “Radioactive” has an alternative rock sound.
Gary: Yeah.
Jessica: But “On Top of the World” is more pop music, I think. But they are really good.
Gary: Oh, yeah! I have heard that song. Yeah, yeah, yeah. It’s definitely much more just a relaxed style.
Jessica: Yeah.
Gary: The other one, “Radioactive,” is so produced, and there are so many sounds happening in it.
Jessica: Exactly. I wonder who their artistic influence is, because they have such a unique sound. And they really rose to fame very quickly.
Gary: I imagine that they’re going to go on tour, and…
Jessica: I hope so.
Gary: … I’d be really interested to see how they actually handle “Radioactive” live, because it sounds like such a studio song.
Jessica: Yeah, it’s very electronically produced.
Gary: Yes.
Jessica: I hope they’re not at their musical peak, but I feel like they are because they have so many hits out there right now.
Gary: Let’s go check them out when they’re playing live.
Jessica: We should. We should definitely see them live.

Discussion
Jessica and Gary are discussing the band Imagine Dragons. She recently heard their new song “On Top of the World” on the radio and wonders if Gary knows it. At first, he only remembers their song “Radioactive,” but then he realizes that he actually knows both hits.
Both Gary and Jessica feel that Imagine Dragons’ sound is unique, and they both understand the band’s success. They’re also curious about how the band would perform songs at a live performance because the song “Radioactive” sounds like it was produced in a studio. When Imagine Dragons go on tour, it’s likely that Jessica and Gary will want to go hear the band.
Do you like Imagine Dragons’ music? Which song is your favorite? What makes their music interesting?
