As they celebrate the new year, many people think of it as a chance to have a fresh start. It’s a time to think back about what they have and haven’t done, and to look into 2015. What will the new year bring?
When the calendar turns to January 1st, people set goals for the year to come. They choose to do things differently for the next 365 days because they believe it will make them happier. For example, some people aim to eat healthier and exercise more. Others may make bigger life decisions like trying to find a better job.
Brian shares his New Year’s resolution with Gary, and they talk about different ways of being successful. Learn more in today’s English lesson about improving one’s life.

Brian: Gary, I am so sore. I went running today.
Gary: Did you?
Brian: Yes. I went running today because it’s my New Year’s resolution to go running every other day.
Gary: You have so much determination. I’m just writing down goals in my calendar book.
Brian: Oh, which one is your New Year’s resolution?
Gary: I don’t have a New Year’s resolution.
Brian: No? You don’t believe in having a fresh start and a clean slate?
Gary: I try to achieve things by planning it, instead of just having a New Year’s resolution.
Brian: So you just go after a goal every month?
Gary: Yeah, so if I have to abandon that goal then the next month I have another goal to go after. Like you, I want a new fresh start. But I have a different way of doing it, I guess.
Brian: That’s pretty good. Also, you write it down. That seems like it might hold you more responsible.
Gary: I hadn’t thought of that. That’s so true. That actually is what I’m doing.
Brian: Good work!

Brian thinks of the new year as a time to set goals that he wants to achieve. He made a New Year’s resolution to run every other day. But not everyone chooses to make New Year’s resolutions.
Gary has a different system for himself. He writes down all of the goals he would like to go after in his calendar, and gives himself a month to be successful at each goal. His plan is different than Brian’s, but they are both trying to better themselves.
Do you make New Year’s resolutions? Or do you set goals during different times in the year?
