We all know that exercise is good for us, but sometimes, it is difficult to begin. Exercising with friends is a great socialization technique that can also make exercise a regular habit. Mall walking is a good example. This simple hobby is becoming very popular. People put on their tennis shoes and workout attire and then go to their local mall.
Before the stores open, these people meet and begin to walk laps around the mall. It’s a simple way to get fit while talking to friends and also window shopping. Because the stores are closed, no one can buy anything. But they can look at the new items in the windows and make a shopping plan while they break a sweat.
Jessica recently tried mall walking and loves it. Listen as she tells Andy about her new hobby in today’s English lesson.

Jessica: I have to admit… I have taken up a very bizarre habit.
Andy_H: You’re not going antiquing again, are you, Jessica?
Jessica: Not this time. I have fallen in love with mall walking.
Andy_H: With mall whating?
Jessica: Mall walking. I don’t know if you know this… the mall actually opens about three hours before all of the stores open so the employees can get in…
Andy_H: Sure.
Jessica: …and there are hundreds of people at the mall, in tennis shoes and workout attire, speed walking and doing laps around the mall.
Andy_H: For exercise?
Jessica: Yes! And it also is a socialization technique. I meet other mall walkers, and we get together and team up, and we coordinate the time that we arrive, and it helps us get fit.
Andy_H: Wow! I’m at a loss for words. Is it good cardio?
Jessica: Well, you’d be surprised. I actually break a sweat, and I don’t break the bank because I’m window shopping.
Andy_H: Well, well, well… maybe, I’ll just have to go mall walking.
Jessica: You can join me.

Discussion
Jessica has a surprising new hobby. She has become a mall walker. Like many other people, she wakes up early and puts on her exercise clothes. Then, she meets her friends at the mall. The stores aren’t open yet, but that’s OK because she just wants to break a sweat while doing some cardio. She tells Andy about this hobby and he is at a loss for words.
Andy has never heard of mall walking before, but he wants to know more about it. He’s surprised that so many people want to go to the mall in order to get fit. Jessica tells him that the best part is being able to window shop while exercising. She can save money and go home feeling good. Andy thinks he might want to join her next time.
Do you go to the mall to exercise? What is your favorite way to get fit?
