Superheroes are a huge part of U.S. popular culture. They were very popular during World War II and other times in U.S. history. They are important to many people because they are inspiring, imaginative, and resilient. Most of the time, we didn’t know the backstories of the superheroes. Now, there are television shows, books, and movies that are just about their backstories.
Some examples are Smallville, Luke Cage, Dare Devil, and more. The movie Logan is about Wolverine from X-Men. The movie shows what Wolverine is like as a person. Logan is his real name. Logan is a very angry, sad, and lonely person. He doesn’t know what to do now that he’s not a part of X-Men. In the movie, he finds someone who gives him hope and goes on a long journey.
Romeo loved Logan the movie. Listen as he tells Marni about it in today’s English lesson.

Romeo: Tell me that you have seen Logan.
Marni: Oh, I haven’t! But I’m assuming you have, and you are going to tell me it’s awesome!
Romeo: Spoiler alert!
Marni: Yeah?
Romeo: No, no, I won’t ruin it for you. But it’s really, really good. It’s better than I actually thought that it was going to be. I was a little not sure how to interpret taking a character and then, instead of putting the focus on him as the Wolverine, putting the focus on him as Logan.
Marni: Right.
Romeo: Since he has kind of, sort of, stepped away from the whole Wolverine. And it’s kind of taking place after, you know, X-Men.
Marni: Right.
Romeo: Where everyone’s kind of gone their own way. Well, I won’t say exactly what way they went because then that would probably be spoiling it.
Marni: Okay.
Romeo: But they bring another character in and then there’s a… connection between that person and Logan.
Marni: A love connection?
Romeo: No, not a love connection. But a connection of…some sort.
Marni: Okay.
Romeo: And, again, I’m trying not to ruin this for you. And then you kind of watch him…sort of evolve.
Marni: Interesting.
Romeo: Around this new connection that forms.
Marni: Okay.

Romeo asks Marni if she has seen Logan. Marni says no, but she guesses that it is amazing. Romeo says he has a spoiler alert, but he is just joking. He says he won’t ruin the movie for her. He didn’t know what to expect from the movie. He wasn’t sure if he would like it because it’s not about Wolverine and the other X-Men. It is about who Wolverine really is.
Romeo wasn’t sure he’d like seeing what Wolverine was like as a person and not as a superhero. Romeo doesn’t want to say too much. He doesn’t want to spoil it for Marni. Romeo says they introduce a new character in Logan. There’s a connection between him and this new character. Marni asks if it was a romantic connection. Romeo says no. He says that Logan changes because of it.
Do you like superhero backstories? Did you like watching Logan?
