When you see someone who has done a great job at something, what do you do? Do you shake their hand? Do you give them a pat on the back? Or do you tip your hat to them? It’s a classic gesture to take off your hat when you speak with someone you admire. It’s a gesture of respect. You might even tell the person, “Hats off to you!”

We use the expression hats off when we want to tell someone they did well. It’s a special way to say congratulations and show how much you respect this person. Singer Liam Payne is a member of the popular band One Direction. Recently, he was asked who his favorite member of One Direction is. He loves working with everyone in this band, but he has a special respect for Niall Horan, so Liam said hats off to him.

Who do you want to say hat off to? Did anyone ever take their hat off for you?

Hats off for firefighters; every year they save hundreds thousands lives across the world.
There were few occasions when people took off their hats for me but I don’t remember for what or might be I just imagined it. :)
