Scientists from the university of Den Hague (Netherlands) found out this August that a high number of mice-eating predators (owls, foxes and snakes for example) reduces the risk of getting transmitted a disease by a tick. Reason is that most ticks get into contact with human beings via mice and rats that search for food in human settlements. With so many predators around the rodents change their behavior, becoming less active. Thus they hardly leave their burrows and getting near them is very unlikely for a human being.

“Tierschutz Euskirchen” says that in the Roman-Catholic church “Hildesheimer Dom” a male and a female eagle-owl (endangered in Germany) now take care of their three young chicks that hatched this week. While after renovations many owners of buildings that once were perfect for owls and bats take measures to avoid these “visitors” in the future, the Roman-Catholic church community of Hildesheim always made sure that renovations of this “Dom” wouldn’t mean more disturbance than necessary for these birds and bats.

There are no critically endangered owls in Germany and yet I think it’s okay to post this comment here: In Hesse (Germany) the German animal-aid organisation now rewarded 70 churches for being constructed in a way that they currently house bats, falcons, ravens, owls and swallows in their belltowers. Especially housing swallows is a good thing to do. Farmers unintentionally kill them by spraying their crop fields with pesticides, old barns are destroyed and replaced by modern places to store hay or stables to house livestock that don’t let any swallows in and – despite this being illegal – some even destroy swallow nests as they are annoyed by the noise and by the excrements of these animals. I think we should just get used to living in a noisy world and as for the excrements you can still legally place something beneath the nest to catch these excrements.

You’re welcome, Kam1! Thanks for commenting!
A healing practitioner in Schleswig-Holstein (Germany) now was mentioned by multiple newspapers for finding a unique therapy against depression. There are therapies involving dogs, horses and even dolphins. Her therapy however involves patients taking a walk with trained owls.

Re-upload: The five critically endangered specimens of owl – apart from the Comoros scops owl I already mentioned under my photo of this country’s rainforest and the kakapo which also belongs to the family of owls – are the pernambuco pygmy – owl you can see in this picture, the forest owl, the Anjouran scops – owl, the Moheli scops – owl and the Siau scops – owl.
You can read about some good organisations that try to preserve these prey birds and that give you the chance of getting involved even online, by visiting the following websites: “http://www.theowlfoundation.ca/donationstogeneraloperation.htm” and “http://www.hawkandowl.org/Shop”.
