1. Quote - Listen to the quote and guess what the slang means.

“I think that in hindsight, it was the beginning of the end for Bush.”

- Michael Moore, documentary film maker, commenting on the effectiveness of his anti-Bush film, Fahrenheit 9/11. (Entertainment Weekly)

1. Definition - Study the definition.

turning point

2. Use - Learn how the slang is used.

In Fahrenheit 9/11, Michael Moore criticizes the way President George W. Bush handled the attack on the World Trade Centers. Moore released the film just before the election in 2004 hoping that it would cause Bush to lose. Though the movie was the most successful documentary of all time, Bush was still reelected.

But now, three years later, Moore looks back and sees Fahrenheit 9/11 as the beginning of the end for Bush, who is now disliked by 70% of Americans. Though Bush is still the President, his popularity has been steadily declining for a long time. Moore believes that his movie helped begin this process.

Michael Moore recognizes a beginning of an end in the past, but sometimes you can recognize the beginning of the end of something in the present. When you and your boyfriend have a fight and you can tell that you will break up soon, you can say, “This is the beginning of the end.”

1. Examples - Hear some example sentences.

“Next time my boss yells at me it will be the beginning of the end. I’ll resign to quit as soon as possible.”

“The Allied landing at Normandy is commonly regarded as the beginning of the end of World War II and Nazi Germany.”
