You’ve probably heard that some strange things are happening in the U.S. right now. The Presidential election has some people very excited. Everyone seems to be confused about what’s going to happen, and most people have very strong opinions! John and Migs are as confused as anyone. They don’t know what to think.

John:  It’s all come down to Florida. What a crazy election!

Migs:  What’s the latest?

John:  Looks like Bush is up by only 388 votes.

Migs:  Was that a hand count or a computer count?

John:  I think it was a hand count. I think that’s all they’re doing now because it’s so close.

Migs:  That kinda worries me. I mean, people always make mistakes, you know?

John:  Yeah, but computers make a lot of mistakes too. And now they have a representative from the Democrats and a representative from the Republicans sitting right there watching the whole thing go on.

Migs:  What do you think’s gonna happen?

John:  That’s a good question. I have no idea and I think that no one in the country has any idea what’s gonna happen. That’s why everything’s in such a mess.

Migs:  It is crazy. All of those people are out picketing and everything. Everyone is so fired up about it, you know.

John:  Yeah, but do even really need a President?

Migs:  I don’t know.

Discussion

Florida has become a very famous place. All attention is focused on that state. But answers are still hard to find. John asks an interesting question at the end of this lesson? “Do we even really need a President?” I’m sure we do, but it is interesting to think about what it would be like if we didn’t have one. Would anything change? Would our lives remain the same? The question reminds me of a wonderful song by John Lennon (from the Beatles). The song is called “Imagine” and it asks similar questions. I encourage you to listen to it. I think it’s a good thing that we are reviewing our voting systems. Many of them have been the same for the last 50 years. It’s time for a change! Do you have any questions about the Presidential election? Do you like Gore or Bush? Please visit the “Life Goes On” message board and let us know. Have a good day, —Migs
