With lyrics that are as sweet as they are nerdy, the band Moldy
Peaches was the perfect fit for the movie Juno. When asked, “What music do you think Juno would listen to?” leading actress Ellen Page said that her character would listen to Moldy Peaches.
Director Jason Reitman then sought out the music and proceeded to weave the music in throughout the movie. Songs from Kimya Dawson and her band Moldy Peaches are speckled throughout the movie.
The final scene ends with the lead characters singing the Moldy Peaches song “Anyone Else But You.” Ellen Page and Michael Cera sing “we sure are cute for two ugly people,” a fitting line for a couple of characters who are commonly made fun of in the movie. It would be hard to imagine a better soundtrack for this quirky film.

Beren: You know that movie Juno?
Jason: Yeah.
Beren: Do you know the soundtrack?
Jason: A little bit. It’s got Moldy Peaches on it, right?
Beren: Yeah, totally. Moldy Peaches. I haven’t heard that name in so long.
Jason: Oh yeah, really? You used to…
Beren: Oh yeah. A couple of years at least. They kinda…Well, they broke up.
Jason: Oh, they did.
Beren: Or at least they went on like a really long hiatus. Cause I know Adam Green had a solo album come out and then Kimya Dawson has had a couple of solo albums come out.
Jason: But so the music on the soundtrack is new Moldy Peaches or is it just like their music has experienced a resurgence because it’s on a soundtrack?
Beren: It’s all old Moldy Peaches. I don’t know if Kimya did a couple of new tracks. I think, she might have. I actually don’t own the soundtrack, but I have heard it a couple of times at work. I think she did a couple of new tracks, but some of it is like her and Adam singing together. So that’s the older stuff. Like the duet.
Jason: But that’s cool that it’s getting a whole new life now that it’s on a big soundtrack.
Beren: Yeah. It’s crazy. It is really surprising. I think a lot of it has to do with the fact that the actress who plays Juno, Ellen Page, like hand picked the songs that meant a lot to her and she is like a huge Moldy Peaches fan.
Jason: But also maybe it has something to do with that the sort of freak folk thing is like big now with Devendra Banhart.
Beren: Yeah, totally!

Discussion
Beren has loved the Moldy Peaches for years. Since Jason doesn’t seem to know much about them, she tells him a little the band’s history, their break-up and solo albums.
The band broke up in 2004 and they never thought they would be this popular. Years after their break-up, Moldy Peaches is a broken band with a number one Billboard song and no plans to reunite. It is kinda sad, but sweet like their anti-folk music.
If your life was a movie, what band would you get to do the soundtrack?
