It may not be the healthiest thing to do, but when bad things happen, people often drink. Last week, Mason’s girlfriend left him and left town to become a nun. So he went to the bar with his friend Marni, who was also recently dumped.
As soon as they walked in, they were greeted by a friendly man and woman. A few hours and a few drinks later, Mason and Marni have gotten pretty tight with their new friends, Dale and Ella. Watch them hang out—if they’re acting a little weird, it’s because they’re pretty buzzed.
3. Watch - Watch the video without reading the dialog.
Dialog
1. Listen and Read - Listen to the audio and read the dialog at the same time.

Mason: I’m not gonna lie, man. My lady left me tonight. But it’s turnin’ out alright because I met you guys!
Dale: That’s right. That’s right. Cheers to that!
Mason: You guys!
Dale: Cheers to that!
Mason: Woo!
Marni: Sad, sad story. His lady is a nun! She converted.
Mason: Freakin’ nun, man. She’s got the hat.
Marni: The habit! It’s a habit!
Mason: It’s a bad habit, is what it is. It’s totally a bad habit.
Dale: Nun…
Mason: I’m havin’ “nun” of that.
Dale: So how long had you and the nun been together?
Marni: Like…uh…
Mason: Man, it was like a year.
Marni: They were so into each other.
Dale: Did you ever have any domestic issues or any type of spousal abuse? Is there anything like that?
Mason: Man, I never…I never laid a harmful hand on her.
Ella: Oh that’s good to know. Good to know.
Dale: That’s really good to know. My partner…I mean my friend and I…
Ella: Yeah, friends.
Dale: ...we usually kind of, you know talk to people about, you know…
Ella: We care.
Mason: You hit her?
Dale: No, no, no. Never.
Ella: Never ever.
Dale: That’s life. That’s actually 5 to 10 years in prison. You can actually do that for domestic abuse. Actually if you get prosecuted by it, they actually can throw you off.
Mason: That is a lot of helpful information.
Marni: Yeah, don’t hit people.
Dale: Oh I read it in a book somewhere. I read it in a book.
Mason: These are some very informational people.
Marni: Knowledgeable.
Mason: Knowledgeable people. I like them.
Marni: I like them too!
Dale: Well, we should hang out more often. Let’s hang more. And I would like to meet the rest of your friends or gang or your peeps. Is that what you call…your peeps.
Mason: Yes! You should join us. You should meet Beren and you should meet Devan. We’ll introduce you guys.
Ella: That sounds great!
Dale: Yeah, Beren.
Ella: Everyone you know would be great.
Marni: I love those girls.
Mason: I know lots of people.
Dale: Do you guys do any of those illegal druggers thingys?
Mason: I do these drugs!

Discussion
Marni and Mason tell Dale and Ella about what happened with Mason’s girlfriend. They seem really interested. Dale asks a lot of questions about the relationship. Ella says she’d like to meet Marni and Mason’s other friends.
What do you think of Ella and Dale? Are they nice new friends or are they up to something?
