In American culture, mothers were traditionally seen as the nurturers in the family, while fathers were considered the breadwinners. But for many 21st century families, these roles are changing. Today, it’s common for fathers to be active and involved in their children’s lives. In some families, it’s even the dad who stays at home with the kids while the mom goes to work and brings home the bacon.

Since 1908 people in the US have been honoring their fathers by celebrating Father’s Day. The exact date of Father’s Day changes each year. This year, it will be held on June 21st.

Dale is the proud papa of a 2-year-old boy. Listen to him and Devan talk about Father’s Day.

Devan:  So Father’s Day is coming up, and I know you’re a father, are you excited?

Dale:  I am extremely excited. I think…This would be technically the third year. ‘Cause the first time I celebrated Father’s Day my wife had my son in her tummy. So this is the third time. But he’s getting older, so it feels a lot more exciting that he can understand it, I think.

Devan:  So he understands what Father’s Day is?

Dale:  I don’t think he’ll understand what Father’s Day is, but it makes me feel good that there’s a day for us fathers to be at least recognized. But nowadays the culture of the United States is a little bit different. More fathers are getting involved with their kids so it’s kind of nice to have a little bit more recognition.

Devan:  I think that it’s definitely good to honor fathers. Did you…Barack Obama made a speech on Father’s Day last year just talking about male role models and how they’re very important and how we need more fathers in the home. It was a very moving speech, so…you know, it’s nice to see people like you who are taking care of their children and stepping up to their responsibilities.

The first time Dale celebrated Father’s Day as a dad was when his wife was pregnant. Now his son is two years old and Dale can’t wait for Father’s Day to come around again.

Both Devan and Dale agree that it’s important to honor fathers. Devan mentions a speech that Barack Obama made on Father’s Day last year encouraging fathers to be involved in their kids’ lives. It’s important for children to have both male and female role models.

In your country, what is the father’s role in the family? Is there anything you’d like to say to your dad on Father’s Day?

in oman we don't actually celebrate father's day only mother's day. however in isalm there is no particular day to celebrate mother's or father's day. we must give them all their rights and what they deserve. but we took the idea from the west to celebrate on this day.

Here in Brazil we celebrate Father's Day in August, always on the second Sunday of the month… many people say that Father's Day is a commercial date, when wives, kids and sons buy some gifts to offer to the dear person called Father. But, if Father's Day is a commercial date or not, we always have to value this person, because he is a great part to growing us up. It's required to remember that in the future we'll become a father or a mother, and this role will be recognized too from our kids!!

In Russia, we haven't really a Fathers's day. I think it's great when both parents are involved in their children's lives. It's very important to kids, parents aren't only persons who nurture them but these who should be a role model. I'm not sure if having this special day will change smth. It would just be an occasion to see our parents et spens time with them.

Here, we celebrate Father´s day in August, but There´s no difference between the meaning of that moving day that we have to honor our fathers. I think Father is a person who has to care about the future of his kids and care about his house and that´s the better role ever in the world for a father.
