Have you ever heard organ music? An organ is like a piano, only with a much bigger sound. Organs are common in churches, and are often played at the beginning and end of a church service. Organs use large pipes to make music, the tallest being 10 meters (or 32 feet) high!

The pipes are played with the use of a tool called a stop. The more stops that are pulled out, the louder the sound. If all of the stops are pulled out, the music will be both loud and incredible to hear.

If someone tells you that she’s planning to pull out all the stops for a friend’s birthday surprise, you will know that it’s going to be big. It may not have loud music like a pipe organ, but it could. It will probably have gifts, cake, and balloons. It might have a caterer, and maybe even one or two bands. The party will be something to remember, because she has pulled out all the stops.

Brian wants Gary to pull out all the stops for his new girlfriend. Girlfriend? It’s true! Learn more in today’s English lesson about new love.

Brian:  So, Rafael tells me you have a girlfriend.

Gary:  Yep.

Brian:  Wait, what? I thought he was kidding.

Gary:  No. I definitely have a girlfriend.

Brian:  Why haven’t you said something?

Gary:  You’ve never asked.

Brian:  Dude, I have to ask you to tell me about a new woman in your life?

Gary:  OK, OK. You’re right. You’re right. I have been thinking that it might be a good time for her to meet everyone.

Brian:  Oh, it definitely is. Why don’t you throw a party? Pull out all the stops. It’ll impress her.

Gary:  That’s not a bad idea. But honestly, I’ve never hosted a party before.

Brian:  Dude, do I have to do everything for you? Pick a date.

Gary:  OK. Next Saturday night.

Brian:  Make a playlist.

Gary:  That’s easy. I know all of her favorite bands.

Brian:  You have to figure out what food and beverages you’re going to serve.

Gary:  Can I just get a caterer?

Brian:  No. Then you’ll also have to send an evite to all your guests. And make sure you clean your house really well.

Gary:  That’s it?

Brian:  I can’t think of anything else.

Gary:  You call that pulling out all the stops? I do more when my parents visit.

Brian:  There’s one other thing you need to do.

Gary:  What’s that?

Brian:  You need to invite your “girlfriend.”

Big news… Gary has a girlfriend! Somehow even Brian, Gary’s good friend and business partner, didn’t know about her. The two friends agree that it’s time for everyone to meet the new love in Gary’s life, and Brian suggests that Gary have a party.

Gary has never hosted a party before, though, so Brian has to help him with the details. Brian tells Gary everything that needs to be done, like choosing the date, music, food, and drinks, inviting his friends, and cleaning his house. After Gary hears Brian’s ideas, he realizes that it won’t be so difficult after all.

Are you surprised that Gary has a girlfriend? Would you ever pull out all the stops to get someone’s attention?

Hehe..looks like Gary’s news hit Brian like a hammer :)

I like Gary’s attitude. He seems to take one step at a time. He wasn’t ready and didn’t want to get ahead of himself. Well done, Gary

When it comes to throwing birthday parties for my girls, I always pull out all the stops. Will continue until they are ready to pull the plug ;-)
