Coconut water has been a favorite drink in tropical areas of the world for thousands of years. It comes from young coconuts and has a mildly sweet flavor. Recently, many people have started drinking coconut water because they have heard about its hydrating and beneficial nutrients. Customers buy coconut water to bump up their energy and feel good.
However, some people think coconut water is a fad. They think that marketing teams are doing a good job of selling coconut water by calling it organic and infusing it with a lot of different flavors. They believe that there are a lot of other fresh foods that have more vitamins and minerals than coconut water.
Jessica and Gary discuss their thoughts on coconut water and if it’s just another fad. Find out what they think in today’s English lesson about coconut water.

Jessica: A friend just introduced me to coconut water. Have you ever had coconut water?
Gary: I have.
Jessica: Oh, it is delicious. I had a pineapple infused coconut water, and it was so good. I know that it’s probably a fad...
Gary: Do you think that it’s a fad?
Jessica: Well, yeah, I think it’s a little trendy.
Gary: I kind of feel like it’s a big fad myself.
Jessica: Really?
Gary: Yeah, I feel like there are all of these drinks out there and foods that people are trying to say, “Hey it’s natural, so it’s really good for you.” And of course organic is a new trend as well. It’s a big fad. Hey, we can grow this and say it’s organic, and we can bump up the price and sell it, and it’s super profitable.
Jessica: Right. But I don’t have any evidence, but I do know that it’s supposed to be beneficial for you if your drink it.
Gary: I’ve heard that.
Jessica: It’s very hydrating, it is organic, it has lots of nutrients and vitamins. So…
Gary: I guess I don’t know. I feel like what you’re describing is a lot of marketing.
Jessica: That’s true.
Gary: It’s supposed to do this. It should do this. It will do this. I don’t know, I feel like it’s selling the idea of the drink. I mean, if you like the drink, then that’s fantastic, but boy are the prices so high. It must be such a profitable drink.
Jessica: It’s true. All right, maybe, I’ll stick to regular water.
