Did you know that squirrels live in almost every country in the world? The only country with no squirrels is Australia. Squirrels come in a multitude of shapes and sizes. The Indian giant squirrel is a large three-foot-long animal, but the African pygmy squirrel is very small, only five-inches long. These fascinating animals are a favorite of people all over the world.

Squirrels love to collect nuts and seeds to eat. They often save these foods for the cold winter. If you bother a squirrel, you have to be careful. They will act on instinct to protect their food. Often, squirrels are antisocial and do not want to be with people, but some squirrels really like humans. They have no hesitation in asking people for food. However, you probably shouldn’t pet these wild animals.

Jessica has been seeing squirrels everywhere. She tells Andy, and Andy shares his knowledge of squirrels in today’s English lesson.

Jessica:  Andy, I keep seeing squirrels everywhere. I don’t know if it’s the weather shift or what’s going on, but they are so adorable.

Andy_H:  Well, Jessica, I’ve seen a lot of squirrels. I’ve seen plenty in America: black squirrels, grey squirrels, thin-tailed squirrels, bushy-tailed squirrels.

Jessica:  Wow!

Andy_H:  They can be really intelligent and fascinating, and they can also be a real pain sometimes.

Jessica:  I didn’t know there were so many different types of squirrels!

Andy_H:  There’s a multitude in America, depending on where you live. And in fact, there are a bunch of squirrels living in a tree in my backyard, and they have no hesitation throwing nuts down at us while we sit down and try to enjoy a picnic.

Jessica:  Yeah, they aren’t very predictable. We have a big tree in our backyard, too. And sometimes, they’re antisocial and leave us alone, but sometimes, they’ll run right up and bother us. But they are really cute. I just need to remember not to reach out and pet them.

Andy_H:  You definitely don’t want to do that. They will act on instinct, and they may hurt you.

Jessica:  Oh, that is true! Thanks for the warning.

Jessica has been seeing a multitude of squirrels all over the place, and she thinks they are very cute. She tells Andy about this, and he shares a lot of information about squirrels. Andy has watched many different types of squirrels with many different personalities. Some of them had thin tails and others were bushy-tailed.

Andy tells Jessica about the squirrels who live in his backyard. They like to throw nuts at him when he tries to eat outside. Jessica also has squirrels in her yard. Sometimes, they try to bother her, and she wants to pet them. But she knows that they might act on instinct and bite her, so she doesn’t reach her hand out to them.

Which types of squirrels live in your country? Are these squirrels antisocial or social?

I live in a big city where these creatures are seen only in a movie . I have been last year in California living with my cousins. Squirrels are everywhere and and from what i saw are bushy tailed. I have seen some of them very social- like going to the neighbour´s door asking for a handout of peanuts, but as a rule they are antisocial. My cousin had bought at Home Depot  a tent and set it up on the patio. The squirrels didn´t have a better idea than to rip apart the canopy. Other than that they are adorable… Hahahaha

I don’t remember I saw one around here. I adore these small creatures from Ice Age series. I don’t think I can help it to reach out to pet them when I see one, I need to keep remembering that.
