Lesson No. 9 – “Reading between the lines” #3:

Janet has been affected emotionally to the knowledge that some of her dept. members will be losing their jobs. In her personal relationship with her boyfriend of two years, she made this statement:

“I didn’t want to write you a formal Dear John letter, but I think we could both use some “me time”; so I’m out.”

Question: What did Janet mean by her statement?

Fatemeh and Bora, you’re both welcome. I’m glad you learned something new.

Another clue to the impending termination of their employment was when Janet made the statement “prepare to rise to the occasion.”

As you may know, the word “the” before “occasion” is a definite article which does not mean any occasion, but a specific occasion. In this case, the specific occasion is a day of terminations (lay-offs.)

The purpose of this forum is to help develop into careful readers. You’re on your way!

Hello Mr. Alston. Thank you very much for your great explanation ๐Ÿ™
I learned a new topic.
It’s still difficult for me to understand and find hidden messages. However, I love this lesson.
Because this is a good challenge for me and I can also learn other things.
Thanks a lot for your great lessons ๐Ÿ™

Explanation of Lesson No. 8:

Janet learned from the upper management meeting that they wanted to reduce the number of employees to reduce the company’s expenses.

Because it wasn’t announced officially, Janet warned her department that layoffs were coming and to prepare themselves.

Here is a paraphrase:

“Arrange your financial affairs to adjust yourself to being terminated from employment.”

This is a strong statement to speak directly, so it was hidden between the lines.

Good effort everyone!

Consider this information to find the hidden meaning:

1. We know that the company is having severe financial problems.

2. We know that the company informed Janet about something to increase their profits to improve the financial situation.

3. At Janet’s dept. meeting, she didn’t say anything like, “let’s work harder to improve our productivity” or something along this line.

Using this information, please modify your answers.

CatcheR, good job and welcome back!

I think this answer is correct:
They must arrange their affairs and solve their problems and they must overcome a difficult situation to succeed

Bora, I’m glad you learned a new phrase. Keep a notebook of new phrases so you can build a vocabulary. No, the message is more specific than your answer. Good try.

Fatemeh, you are partly on the right track, but be more specific in your answer.

Hint: Focus your attention on the phrase “rise to the occasion” to add to the whole story to determine the hidden meaning.
