In the new movie Lost In Translation (2003), Bob Harris (Bill Murray) and Charlotte (Scarlett Johansson) are two Americans in Tokyo. Bob is a movie star in town to shoot a whiskey commercial, while Charlotte is a young woman tagging along with her workaholic photographer husband. Unable to sleep, Bob and Charlotte meet one night in the hotel bar. This chance meeting soon becomes a good friendship. Charlotte and Bob venture through Tokyo, having often hilarious encounters with its citizens, and ultimately discover a new belief in life’s possibilities.

Beth:  So Ali, have you seen any films lately?

Ali:  Yeah. I actually just saw Lost in Translation last weekend.

Beth:  Cool. What’s it about?

Ali:  It’s about, um, a woman who’s married to a photographer, and so they’re in Japan, when she’s just sitting at the hotel while he takes pictures and then she meets an old actor that used to be sort of like Arnold Swarzenegger, and now he’s washed up. And so they’re in Japan, just going around and seeing different things.

Beth:  That’s neat. So, what happens when they meet?

Ali:  Well they meet in a bar and she actually, um, buys him a drink, even though she’s married, so there’s sort of, it’s sort of unclear if they like each other or not.

Beth:  That’s cool. Do you remember who’s in it?

Ali:  Uh huh. Bill Murray’s in it. And there’s a girl named Scarlett Johansson. She’s not that famous yet.

Beth:  Nice. Would you recommend seeing it?

Ali:  Definitely. It was really, really funny, and it was interesting – said a lot about relationships.

Discussion

Lost in Translation is my kind of movie. I’m super excited to see it. I think Sofia Coppola, who wrote and directed the movie, is an amazing filmmaker. Her last film, The Virgin Suicides was one of my favorite movies of all time.
If you liked The Virgin Suicides too, or if you enjoyed movies like Rushmore or The Royal Tenenbaums, then I think you’ll really like Lost in Translation.
See you at the movies!
Anna
