Quote

1. Quote - Listen to the quote and guess what the slang means.

“She really is one of the few actresses that I know where she has such impeccable timing as a comedienne/actress. She really listens and she has timing in terms of knowing. It’s just in her bones. She knows when to say it and when to not say anything. She just takes things in and she listens in a way that’s very real too, I think. [She has] just incredible timing, which I think is a real gift.”
- Ben Stiller, actor, talking about Jennifer Aniston, his co-star in the new movie Along Came Polly.

Definition

1. Definition - Study the definition.

inherent, intrinsic; part of her basic nature, something she’s had since birth (rather than something she’s learned)

2. Use - Learn how the slang is used.

You can use “in her/his/your bones” to describe a skill that someone seems to have naturally. Rather than a learned skill, something that’s “in your bones” is something you’ve had since birth. It’s something you can do without trying extremely hard, because it just feels so normal and easy. For example, if you’re very good at a sport, but you don’t have to practice very hard to be good at it, then that sport is “in your bones.”

Examples

1. Examples - Hear some example sentences.

””Basketball may have been in Michael Jordan’s bones, but he still had to work very, very, very hard to become the best basketball player ever to play the game.”“

””Christina Aguilera is one of the most talented singers on the planet. Singing is in her bones. She’s just an amazing performer.”“

””I don’t think you can learn to be funny. It’s either in your bones or it’s not. There’s way to make yourself a funny person if you’re not.”“

””George is the best skiier I’ve ever seen. It’s like he was born on the snow. Skiing is just in his bones.”“
