Product Placement English, baby! Video Lesson

Date: May 06 2008

Themes: Soap Opera

1. Learn Vocabulary - Learn some new vocabulary before you start the lesson.

2. Read and Prepare - Read the introduction and prepare to hear the audio.

These days marketing is all about being subtle. Look closely and you’ll notice fast-food restaurants in the background of a movie or that your favorite pop star always drinks the same soft drink on stage. Those things are no accident. Companies pay top dollar to have their products put in places where people will see them.

Ebaby! doesn’t yet sell ad space in our lessons, but here’s a dramatization of what it might look like if we did. Don’t worry, the soap opera will be back to its regularly scheduled programming next week.

3. Watch - Watch the video without reading the dialog.

1. Watch and Read - Watch the video and read the dialog at the same time.

2. Study - Read the dialog again to see how the vocab words are used.

Marni:  Ugh. I’m all out of Coke. I hate that.

Beren:  Do you want some Tecate?

Marni:  Uh, no thanks. I just, I really want more Coke.

Amanda:  How about a Corona Extra? Miles from ordinary? Or maybe a scrumptious crunchy toast chip?

Marni:  I will take a chip. Thank you. I love these Tim’s potato chips. Mm. So good.

Beren:  Whoa, careful not to get any crumbs on the MacBook Pro.

Marni:  Mm. I know. I love these Macintosh computers. They’re so nice.

Devan:  Hey guys, what’s going on?

Marni:  Oh my God, did you get a new Gwen Stefani purse?

Devan:  Why yes, I did.

Beren:  What’s in your hand?

Marni:  Yeah!

Devan:  Did you know right now at Motorola that if you buy one Razor you get another free?

Amanda:  Cool!

Marni:  Wow!

Amanda:  Cute colors.

Jason:  Hey guys, check out my new Rivendell bicycle.

Marni:  Wow. Oh my God, I hate these banner ads. There’s so much product placement on the Internet, it’s so annoying.

Beren:  Yeah.

Amanda:  We’re more than consumers.

Marni:  Really.

One by one, each member of the Ebaby! cast shows up to plug a different product. Then they complain about how much advertising there is on the Internet!

But the scene isn’t too far from reality. People do often have brand loyalty to a particular drink or type of computer or bicycle. Are you a big fan of a particular brand? What kinds of advertising do you think are annoying and what kinds do you think are helpful?

Advertising is important to show consumers the benefits offered by a specific product, but at times the advertiser does not communicate adequately what becomes annoying…

Well, it's hard to say. I think the attitude towards ads depends on what kind of people you are and what kind of things you prefer.  For me. I like ads to introduce learning sth new or the most popular news or music or videos.  Making friends thing is also my cup of tea.    I hate ads which persuade you to buy mobile phone and other electronic goods. Because there are so many of them and sometimes you can't close the ads window.

Yes,advertising is a good way to give consumers' primary pression about the merchandise~~

Advertising is one way to get information about this world in which thousands of news things are emerging everyday. Ad is just playing a role of undating those information everyday. To buy or not is up to you! It's probablly another chance to challenge your capability of distinguishing gold from rubish, and of resisting temptation from outside and inner side. Additionally, ad is an important finance source of other interesting program for tv. So i take it with prudence.

Real good things don’t need to be advertised. Once you’ve tried something and it proved to be good, you’ll definitely buy it again.
This is one way you stick to a specific brand.
The other way is actually being “brainwashed” by the all-pervasive ads, ending up a victim of advertisers’ subtle tricks to push their products and make sure you remember their name. You whine about annoying ads but when in the supermarket, you still reach for the familiar.
Of course, there are those adverts that raise awareness on important issues too, such as AIDS, domestic violence, global warming etc. Those are less annoying. :-)

They really bug me, when I especially see  an interesting movie, there's an attracting sence and I wanna continue to see what is going on, accidentally product placement appear. They last for 10-15 minutes or even 30 minutes. I really bother and lose inspiration to that movie Frown

advertising could be ok if it comes in proper time with a lot of fun and of course it also should be true

Cool Any product annoying me. I think Macintosh an excellent computer and Gwen Stefani purse is very famous and expensive. So, I like brand products. I always buy pants of Zoomp and I like very much Dolce & Gabbana perfume and purse. So, I am consumer.

I don´t like advertising at all, but it influences our lives if we like it or not.
In fact, I would like to say that I am not a big fan of a particualr brand, but honestly… when I buy a pair of trekking shoes and they are really good, next time I will go and buy the same brand again!!  So we can say that my brand loyalty comes from my experiences with the products.
The thing is, that most advertised products are usually the most expensive ones, because the firms have to pay a lot of money for marketing.
